My youngest is now 5 years old. Happy Birthday.

Rissy is now 5. We went to see Ice Age 4, the movie and had ice cream before. It has become a tradition in our family for me to take just the birthday girl out to do something of their liking. They have a couple of choices, most of the time the girls all pick ice cream and a movie. Its cheaper than inviting a million people over from both families and removes the feeling they have to buy a gift. Rissy loves hanging out with just dad, and I like that too.

This is the 3rd time we have done this on her birthday, the second with Type 1 Diabetes. We had a blast! We went to Cold Stone Creamery, you can pick you own mix in’s for ice cream, see link for the gory details. She had cherry vanilla with peanut butter cups mixed in and I had french vanilla, yummy. The movie was funny and we had a blast. When we got home we had dinner and cupcakes after with a big #5 candle on it. She got a barbie, no surprise there, she smiled big.

She has done a lot and had a lot happen in 5 years. Both her and her sisters lost their insulin production in the pancreas via their rogue immune systems. They have been to a bunch of JDRF events, a big JDRF conference, 3 JDRF walks and Friends for Life in Florida. She had her picture taken with celebrities and swam in the ocean this past month. She does it all with a smile that lights up the room. She is feisty, she hits anyone, boys included, that will help the older she gets. Diabetes bothers her less than it does me and my wife, which leaves me puzzled at times, other times she cries, which leaves me sad. Someday on her birthday we will celebrate a first birthday without diabetes. Someday. I love you my daughter! I love you so much!

Godspeed

Tim

It sounds as if she is handling everything quite well, she's got that “nothings gonna stop me” spirit! (Cold Stone Creamery gives me feelings of guilt for just stepping in the door, but that's just me). Happy Birthday Rissy!

  2. Thanks Scott! She kind of has that hockey enforcer mentality, lol. I feel guilty going to Cold Stone and my pancreas spanks the crap out of high glycemic index foods like ice cream, maybe I feel guilt there too. lol
