Little Star-Gazer.

It was late one night after work and my wife and I were sitting on the back porch talking and relaxing with a glass of wine. It had been a long day at work for me and a long day for my wife. What a better way to relax at midnight than with a glass of wine and the lady of my dreams. But, this time of relaxing got interrupted, by you guessed it, diabetes.

Sitting there we heard a little voice, half crying, “mommy, daddy”, my wife replied we’re out here honey. She immediately came to the back door and seemed to forget the calamity that had befallen her. “What are you guys doing, she ask”. “We are just sitting here talking, what’s wrong” my wife asks. “My mini is beeping” (CGM), by that time I had went to the door and check her mini, high alarm had awoken her. The graph had her trending down slightly and 220 was no call to arms. I scoped her up in my arms and carried her back to my chair and sat down.

I don’t know why I didn’t send her strait back to bed, but I guess a little cuddle time was not all that bad. Soon she began to ask about the noises she heard. I told her they were frogs, crickets and bugs signing there songs. I think she liked the sound they made and the fact they were singing.

She saw some street light through the trees and ask if they were stars. I told her to look up in the sky, and told her those are the stars. “Oh wow”, she said. I pointed out some of the bigger stars and she ask what their names were. I gave my best answers and I’m sure she would have believed next to anything I said. I carrier her around the yard  bit and pointed out the bigger stars and got some better views through the trees. I promised to take her to my parents house soon to watch the stars, they are so much brighter there.

We both enjoyed it. She is my youngest and is 5 years old. She is still small enough to carry around (without getting exhausted right away), but that time is getting less. I’ll take every chance I can get to share a special moment like that.  So for a few minutes that night she got to be little star-gazer.

Update. She is graduating high school in a few weeks. God is good!

Godspeed:

My youngest is now 5 years old. Happy Birthday.

Rissy is now 5. We went to see Ice Age 4, the movie and had ice cream before. It has become a tradition in our family for me to take just the birthday girl out to do something of their liking. They have a couple of choices, most of the time the girls all pick ice cream and a movie. Its cheaper than inviting a million people over from both families and removes the feeling they have to buy a gift. Rissy loves hanging out with just dad, and I like that too.

This is the 3rd time we have done this on her birthday, the second with Type 1 Diabetes. We had a blast! We went to Cold Stone Creamery, you can pick you own mix in’s for ice cream, see link for the gory details. She had cherry vanilla with peanut butter cups mixed in and I had french vanilla, yummy. The movie was funny and we had a blast. When we got home we had dinner and cupcakes after with a big #5 candle on it. She got a barbie, no surprise there, she smiled big.

She has done a lot and had a lot happen in 5 years. Both her and her sisters lost their insulin production in the pancreas via their rogue immune systems. They have been to a bunch of JDRF events, a big JDRF conference, 3 JDRF walks and Friends for Life in Florida. She had her picture taken with celebrities and swam in the ocean this past month. She does it all with a smile that lights up the room. She is feisty, she hits anyone, boys included, that will help the older she gets. Diabetes bothers her less than it does me and my wife, which leaves me puzzled at times, other times she cries, which leaves me sad. Someday on her birthday we will celebrate a first birthday without diabetes. Someday. I love you my daughter! I love you so much!

Godspeed
